Seven Years (Seven Series #1) by Dannika Dark: Review

Seven years ago, my world ended.
Seven years later, my new life began.

It’s been seven years since Lexi Knight lost her brother in a tragic accident. On the anniversary of his death, her brother’s best friend shows up unexpectedly – a man she hasn’t seen since the funeral. He is no longer the boy Lexi once knew, but a dangerous-looking man with tattoos and dark secrets. He broke her trust and abandoned her family, yet what he reveals makes it impossible to stay angry. Lexi has been secretly infatuated with Austin since childhood, so finding out he’s a Shifter just makes him sexier. Dammit.

Austin Cole has returned to the city where he grew up, and just in time. He’s lived a hard life these past seven years, and the shadows of his past are threatening to destroy Lexi’s family. It’s time that she learned the truth about her brother, but there is a shocking twist that Austin never saw coming. Now he must protect her family when her mother and sister wind up in mortal danger. Will Lexi learn to accept the truth about who he is, and can Austin salvage a relationship from the ruins of their past?

About the Author: Dannika Dark was born on a military base in the U.S. and traveled the world before she was 9. Now she is rooted in the south but her head is planted firmly in the clouds. When she is not writing, she enjoys a great sci-fi or fantasy movie, heaps of chocolate, reading, and unleashing her dark side. Dannika loves reading paranormal romance, urban fantasy, fiction, and anything that grabs her attention.

Dannika Dark also has another series called the Mageri Series, an exciting adult urban fantasy romance following the journey of a young woman’s claim to immortality and her own identity. Dark, unique, and full of unpredictable twists, the Mageri series provides an original spin to an old concept. Sometimes ordinary people are destined to lead extraordinary lives.

My Review: Four Hearts rating

As a loyal fan to J.R. Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood series, I’m always on the lookout for a new paranormal series that is similar. A fellow fan of the series said that the Seven Series is very similar and that it’s really fantastic to read. Of course, BDB is kind of hard to beat with it’s smoking hot, seductive, vampire man-candy.

Yet Dannika Dark did it for me. She may not have surpassed BDB on the scale but she sure joined the top of the list! In her new Seven Series, she brings out a world that you can’t help but feel compelled to love.

In this specific novel, Lexi Knight has gone through some crap over the last seven years. After losing her brother and having her father pack up and leave behind his wife, Lexi, and her younger sister Maizy, she’s had enough with bad things going on in her life. Then Austin Cole comes back to town.

As you can find out from the Synopsis, Lexi was completely infatuated with Austin growing up and he was best friends with her brother. After her brother dies, Austin leaves everyone behind and completely breaks Lexi’s heart. Then he decides to come back and tell her that he’s a shifter? What the hell is right.

Austin is such a sweetheart. He comes off very mysterious at first, but he truly cares for Lexi and has her best interests at heart. With every single turn of the page I felt my little ol’ heart go pitter patter to Austin and his antics.

In the beginning, Lexi is very standoffish. I guess given her history, it’s completely understandable. After she comes to accept everything though, I completely loved her. She’s playful, loyal, and absolutely loves those around her.

My favorite character in the book is by far Denver though (Austin’s brother). When you read it you will find out why. He’s the laid-back brother, and his devotion to Maizy was very enchanting.

This book isn’t as ‘spicy’ as Black Dagger, but it definitely has it’s sexual moments. Lexi and Austin have amazing chemistry but I love that Dannika focused a lot on their actual relationship and not just their attraction to each other.

Please…if you love a good Paranormal romance and are in the mood for a great shifter story, pick up Seven Years and enjoy the ride!
